Today I Lost 178 PoundsI couldn’t stand thatToday I Lost 178 Pounds
breakfast was just a grapefruit and skim milk.
After all, diet is just ‘die’ with a ‘t’
at the end.
Lunch was some lettuce and tuna with fat free dressing, and you had the nerve to call that a salad.
For dinner I chose to leave
the fork on the plate. Bland grilled chicken and steamed broccoli could not satisfy like the chocolate
melting in my mouth or your back to me as I slammed the door for the last time.

And watches Blowing smoke rings And ashing to The floor

She ties her shoes
tight to remind herself she’s still alive,
and the permanence fills her eyes with a hue not found
in the spectrum.
Feeling the zephyr and the first stretch
of muscles and tendons, the pavement is rigid and littered with children. She’s undisturbed
A Vegetable is Not AliveOn the news there was a story about a farmer in Florida who had grown the biggest pumpkin. The reporter asked why he left it on the vine; surely it wasA Vegetable is Not Alive
worth a blue ribbon somewhere. Maybe it would be in Guiness. The farmer said it would break his heart to cut it now. Starving to death wasn't an option. But it sucked the soil and water away from the other vegetables. His wife wanted it cut and gone to make room for her watermelon so they would taste good in the summer. A vegetable is not alive, she told him, even on the vine.

The captain’s oak-chest heaves
reflect a buoy floating on rolling waters' life-like jabs.
A half-wink and pipe clenching lips strain like ropes taut across his face,
drawing chin to cheek.
With a snow globe fastened by a puckered squint he bears a swashbuckler’s glare while spit swells over his tongue swirl around gold-stained teeth -
what madness would have
waves tearing down on him
through shredded sails?
The ocean belly swallows
could forever tug at the ship waiting for i
